No, not seriously. This must be a joke. Please tell me this is not happening.

If it helps the cause of science, I think Galileo himself would have agreed to this.

Beam me up, Scotty. I know, I know – no one ever said that on Star Trek! Simmer down.

What a shame that something as fantastic as the calculus was essentially lost for 1900+ years.

The 87-year-old civil rights leader practically stole the show. Good for him.

"Dude, this is a big moment for me. Can you try that again?"

This is worth watching today.

The children, white children, have grown up around African-American teachers, neighbors, friends and, for that matter, relatives of mixed ancestry. And, really, how does one explain the way things were 50 to 60 years ago?

Just like your new government, WhiteHouse.gov and the rest of the Administration's online programs will put citizens first.
Well, I guess I can talk about it now …
The Mets really let us down this year.
Billy and I went to Shea for five games (and one rainout) this year. All of our games were after the change in management and it seemed as though the Mets were on a roll. We were certain the Mets would not disappoint us as they did last season.
We also took the girls with us for a game against the Phillies. We had timed it just right. The Mets tied with the Phils for the NL East lead on Sunday 7/20. Both teams were off on Monday and our game was for Tuesday. The Mets beat up on the Philles for more than 7 innings and then it all fell apart. It turned from one of the best days of my life to one of the worst – all in the space of an hour or less.
It was a microcosm of the season really.
One of the games we did get to attend turned out to the last game played at Shea. We’d planned for it to be the last regular season game. We were perfectly willing to let others enjoy the last games if they were in the playoffs.
I didn’t expect the Mets to do much in the playoffs but I wanted them to prove to me that they would not collapse again.
I was in Philly today. I left by 3 so I didn’t get caught up in the mayhem for the 4:35 game. I have to tell you that I was jealous. All those fans enjoying their team’s success. I was a little sick.
Watching game two now and the Phillies are in the midst of a rally. Ugh.
Go Dodgers!
Interesting Place to Pick Back Up
I decided to start my new blogging routine today and I noted a link in my last post – “How much will the Mets miss Tom Glavine?”
No much, huh?
Anyway, I plan to start with a few book and DVD reviews since I am changing the way those display on my homepage. After that, maybe I’ll have something to say about the election.
Math and Baseball
Two of my favorite things. It can’t get much more fun than this!

Coach was thrown out of the game today. I got there after the fact and noone seemed to know why. One parent made a comment that he probably had just been doing what he did every game. His style may be a little rough around the edges but I think he did a fine job this year. Thanks coach.
Game Ball
I mentioned in an earlier post that Billy is playing on the Jr. High baseball team. Not only is he in 6th grade, but he is young for a sixth grader. Most players on the team are 13, 14 and 15. Even some of the sixth graders are 13. Billy is 11! He loves baseball and he wants to play.Today’s game was a little better than the first. We discovered another eighth grader that can pitch reasonably well. Today was his first time and he pitched the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings. He struck out 4 of the first six batters he faced, struck out 3 batters each inning for a total of nine. Looks promising. We lost 16 to 1 but the team learned a lot.The highlight of the afternoon for us was when Billy was awarded a game ball for his “brave performance behind the plate.” Not only did Billy volunteer to catch the fifth inning (he’s never attempted this before), but in the bottom half of the fifth, he was facing a full count with two outs and a man on third. He was hit by a pitch in the chest. He was hurt badly but he will be okay. Anyway, he kept the inning alive and our man on third was able to score on the next play.On the day he had a walk and was hit by a pitch. For the season he is 0 for 1 with an OBP of 667. Not bad, keep up the good work!
Billy’s First Game
Billy had his first game for the middle school baseball team. He is the youngest one on the team, but he did very well. He made a nice play in center field that impressed the coach (and everyone else). Tough game. We lost 23 to 3, but the 6th graders are still learning.
Go Nimrods
My son and I put together a fantasy baseball team every year on Yahoo! and we love it. We participate in a live online draft and then monitor the team all season. It’s a blast.Anyway, this season we’ve had a rough start. The past two seasons we spent in the top 3 in our league (12 teams). This season we have never broken above number 8! We are having trouble adjusting. After about an hour of reading some of my favorite Chrisitan websistes this morning, I stopped by Yahoo! to check on today’s lineup for the week and quickly became frustrated by the interface. They have changed it somewhat from last year and it annoys me. I click on ‘Opponents’ to list the matches for the week. Then I select pitchers for today and click ‘Submit Changes.’ It always brings me back to the default ‘Stats’ view so I have to click ‘Opponents’ again. Just a minor annoyance. I will be writing my own interface to solve this problem. I may not get to it until next weekend, but I will do it. Of course I may need to check the TOS at Yahoo! as it seems many sites are banning scraping. I have been reading on this topic a lot this week (here and there )and will post my thoughts on it soon. My gut reaction is — You’ve got to be kidding! What’s next? You must read the newspaper in the living room, not the bathroom. No fast-forwarding through ads after you tape (or TiVO) something. (actually this has been debated already) I’m scraping and you can’t stop me! That’s just my gut reaction. I could be wrong.
